About eight weeks ago I posted this video:
In it, I talked about eBay’s push to add extended bidding, which will effectively end snipe bidding as we know it. I stupidly assumed that people understood the benefits of snipe bidding.
That video has about 40,000 views. Only 91.8% of people who added a like/dislike liked it. My channel average is 97.6%. It’s easily my most hated video ever.
The comments are worse: many people called me scum or worse for participating in snipe bidding. One person said anyone snipe-bidding should be executed!
But most surprising were all the commenters who suggested that anyone interested in an auction should just put their max bid in immediately and let it ride.
So let me explain my perspective on why snipe bidding benefits you as a bidder:
Less time for other bidders to react: an early bid draws attention to your presence and interest and can create a back-and-forth. Once someone starts bidding on something, they have the sense of ownership before even winning. People want to win. This is why we see auctions sometimes ending for higher prices than Buy It Now listings for the same cards. Adding yourself — another bidder — into the process gives other bidders warning that they might need to increase their max bid.
Other comps: another comparable card might sell in the interim, telling you if you had valued the card too high.
No regrets: how often have you added a max bid on eBay with five days remaining, only to find a better option during the next five days? Are you going to bid on two? I wouldn’t.
On the other side, Eric of Those Back Pages explains a good reason for adding a placeholder bid on a low-demand auction:
Another one is if you value something at $10 and someone starts an auction for it at $9.99, throwing in that first bid may be enough to win it.
I’m curious for your thoughts: do you bid early and often, or do you wait?
