Grading cards is a paid service. No guarantee that it will increase value of your card. The most helpful part to me is authentication . I don't like the upcharge because of the value of a card. Seems shady to me. I also thought you might cover Trout pulling his own card out of a pack. The odds are astronomical that he'd pull his own autographed card.

Yeah maybe he’s ripped a ton of them? I watched and his kid was adorable.

I don't know if it's a scam, but most grading companies hire Labor temps to grade cards. Most of these people have no interest in cards to start with, it's just a minimum wage job for them. Also if they are grading a million cards a month how long does each card actually get examined, and there's a huge lack of constancy because of this. A lot of people have resubmitted the same card multiple time just get a different grade each time. I never send cards in to get graded, but I will definitely buy them when a PSA 9 sells for less than a raw card, or if the raw card is $5 and a PSA. 9 is $8 dollars why not buy the slab, it display nicely. But I would never pay over $20 to have some random dude give me there option on my card.

These are all valid points! But also not a scam.

Haha! I thought Jeter was talking about that card! I remember getting the good old Front Row catalog in the mail as a kid and bugging my dad to get me some stuff from it. I actually got the signed version of this! It was probably the greatest investment of my childhood. I just got it graded a year ago or so after having it sitting in a screw down for over 20 years. It got an 8 :(, but not bad considering. I'll never sell it so i guess it doesn't really matter.

OH yeah, I just came across Retro Rick as well! But it kind of makes more sense for me since a coworker gifted me a couple of old Arcade 1up cabinets. Now i'm looking to upgrade them and turn them into 1,000 plus game cabinets! It's gonna be a fun project! I loved going to arcades back in the day, now i can pass that on to my son with some an arcade of our own!

That’s awesome! I want an arcade cabinet at some point too.

Grading is not a scam. It can be costly if your not careful in submissions but we recently just submitted some cards and some i know wont grade 10 but will be protected going forward. My biggest thing about grading is why such a large disparity in value from 9 to 10. For majority of card and im not talking the most expensive but 9s are much cheaper and to the eye pretty much look the same but value wise normally a nice difference in price.

What's your Letterboxed user name, if you don't mind sharing? I haven't had a chance to check out Terrifier 2 but if it has scenes that top "saw scene" in the first one, I can't even conceive if what that might entail.

Mike Junk Wax HeroAuthor2 years ago
I definitely think it tops Saw in terms of gore!
I don’t do anything worth following on Letterboxed. I leave everything private and just rate things so I remember what I thought.

It IS a scam and I know at least one of my cards that was sent in for grading was swapped out for another that was substituted for my card & then sent back to me as “ ALTERED “…..what a joke ! I went back-n-forth with the grading company’s pres., stating altering/cutting/trimming a card was something I would NEVER do as I’ve been collecting since the ‘60’s…..it was my first grading experience & REALLY turned me off to it…..he stated “ …..I trust my graders & whatever they say about a card I’ll stand behind….. “. Well, I won’t be sending in any more…..hope someone really legally busts them up for good. You’re at their total control unless you could have the grading done firsthand — right before your eyes ! Play it safe — don’t let your cards out of your sight ! Grading — you really don’t need it ! N

Mike Junk Wax HeroAuthor2 years ago
I’m sorry this happened to you. Is it possible that it was trimmed before it entered your collection?
Neal Mundt2 years ago
No — it couldn’t have. It never left my collection…..as I told the prez of the grading company I’ve been collecting since I was a kid in the ‘60’s & ALL my cards went carefully, initially, into 9-pocket pages into binders or boxes with dividers in them…..pretty much like the storage boxes of today. Then many of them into sleeves & top-loaders where they are today…..I was truly shocked of being accused of trimming but I understand that IS what some might be doing today to obtain a better grade. Not me…..never could do it ! Haven’t they ever seen miscuts from the factory and they come that way right out of the pack ?! ( I have a dandy example of that in a ‘63 Banks…..). I stand by my feelings about grading in general — it was created as a way to make big, big bucks for the grading companies & it is a way to solidify the nature/condition/relative worth of many cards…..but it isn’t for everybody. What did you think of Mikes video showing what PSA rejected and SGC graded? A real eye opener. Someone needs to be exposed especially on the altered ones. I won’t call grading a scam however it makes you wonder about the product we’re paying good money for?

Mike Junk Wax HeroAuthor2 years ago
Yeah those are really interesting! Sloppy? Maybe! Inconsistent? For sure! Not a scam though.
